Lawrence Brownlee takes center stage in “Lawrence Brownlee & Friends in Philadelphia,” a recital and conversation program in which he is joined by three women with deep ties to Philadelphia: sopranos Lindsey ReynoldsSarah Shafer, and Karen Slack, accompanied by pianist Myra Huang. Curated by the performers, the program features music by composers Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, Amy Beach, and Jacqueline Hairston, alongside works by Mozart, Donizetti, and Massenet. The show will premiere on Friday, October 23, at 8:00 p.m. EST, and remain available on-demand throughout the season.

“I am thrilled to invite everyone to join us for a night of arias, songs, spirituals, and conversation as we launch this exciting digital season on the Opera Philadelphia Channel,” Brownlee said.

Oakland, CA – (April 28, 2019) – James Toland Vocal Arts, Inc. announced today the 14 finalists for its annual JTVA Vocal Competition, to be held in Oakland on June 14 & 15. The prestigious JTVA competition awards $100,000 in prize money and gives gifted, emerging singers exposure to expert judging, master classes, performance opportunities, and more. This year’s 14 finalists were chosen from a pool of 238 applicants from 34 states and 26 countries, the largest in the competition’s six-year history.

Curtis singers present a children’s opera based on classic fables of Anasi, the Spider, a beloved hero of West African folklore. This shape-shifting character, who triumphs over adversity thanks to his characteristic wit and cunning, will entrance all ages. Composer and Community Artist Fellow Nicholas DiBerardino will gather text and musical material from students at Girard College and William Cramp Elementary School to bring Anansi’s adventures to life.
