Opera Philadelphia returns to its longtime home for grand opera with Verdi’s unforgettable tragedy Rigoletto, one of the most popular works in the operatic canon. Featuring such well-known arias as Rigoletto’s passionate denouncement “Cortigiani, vil razza dannata,” Gilda’s dreamy “Caro nome,” and the Duke of Mantua’s instantly recognizable “La donna è mobile,” Rigoletto is a tale of fate, revenge, and the abuse of power.
In a timely production from New Zealand Opera, director Lindy Hume offers no mercy for powerful men who hurt women. Set at a “presidential palace” on election night, Hume confronts the newsmakers of today with a production that refuses to romanticize or ignore the Duke’s brutal treatment of women.
The cast features baritone Anthony Clark Evans, lauded for his “stentorian Verdi style” by the Chicago Tribune, as the cursed court jester. Tenor Joshua Blue makes his company and role debuts as the philandering Duke, with soprano Raven McMillon in her company and role debuts as Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda. Jack Mulroney Music Director Corrado Rovaris leads the Opera Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus.

The Curtis Opera Theatre returns to the live stage for the first time since March 2020 with Mozart’s comic masterpiece. In this uproarious fiancée-swapping romantic comedy, brothers Guglielmo and Ferrando scheme to test the fidelity of their betrothed, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. With the help of their friend Don Alfonso and the mischievous maid Despina, the two brothers put their love to the test.

This fall the Curtis Opera Theatre brings Mozart to the silver screen! MERCY, a radical reimagining of La clemenza di Tito, tells the story of the Roman emperor Tito, the vengeful Vitellia, and her besotted admirer Sesto. Will Vitellia’s plot to assassinate the emperor and claim the throne for herself succeed? Experience this gripping tale of jealousy, revenge, and forgiveness as you’ve never seen or heard it before.
Students from the Curtis Opera Theatre unite with alumni and members of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra to perform Mozart’s reorchestrated score. MERCY was filmed in March 2021 by the award-winning Neighborhood Film Company at Rittenhouse Filmworks and Rittenhouse Soundworks.

Lawrence Brownlee takes center stage in “Lawrence Brownlee & Friends in Philadelphia,” a recital and conversation program in which he is joined by three women with deep ties to Philadelphia: sopranos Lindsey Reynolds, Sarah Shafer, and Karen Slack, accompanied by pianist Myra Huang. Curated by the performers, the program features music by composers Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, Amy Beach, and Jacqueline Hairston, alongside works by Mozart, Donizetti, and Massenet. The show will premiere on Friday, October 23, at 8:00 p.m. EST, and remain available on-demand throughout the season.

Picker’s sixth opera, AWAKENINGS, set to a libretto by Aryeh Lev Stollman and based on Dr. Oliver Sacks's book of the same name, is premiered at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis (OTSL) in JUNE 2020, with James Robinson directing and Roberto Kalb conducting.

The prestigious JTVA competition awards $100,000 in prize money and gives gifted, emerging singers exposure to expert judging, master classes, performance opportunities, and more. This year’s 14 finalists were chosen from a pool of 238 applicants from 34 states and 26 countries, the largest in the competition’s six-year history.

Curtis Opera Theatre at the Perelman unites two powerful works into a single production that explores the stories of families in crisis.
In Riders to the Sea by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a grief-stricken widow laments the loss of her many sons to the sea, as it threatens to claim the life of her only remaining son.
It’s a poignant prelude to Empty the House, a 2016 opera composed by Curtis Institute of Music alum and Opera Philadelphia Composer in Residence Rene Orth, whose work “breaks new ground” (Opera News), and featuring a libretto by Mark Campbell (Elizabeth Cree, Silent Night). In Empty the House, a daughter returns to her childhood home for a weekend with her mother and is confronted by painful memories.
Both works—premiered nearly 80 years apart—explore the complicated relationships between mothers and children, brothers and sisters, the loved and the lost.
Empty the House is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, an independent federal agency.

The YPO/FGO Voice Competition is held once every two years. The finals concert is open to the public and features ten opera singers who compete for top prizes of $10,000 (Senior Young Artist, age 25 to 30) and $7,500 (Junior Young Artist, age 20 to 25). Each singer presents two arias from the standard opera repertoire, accompanied by piano, before a panel of judges and the audience. The judges are opera professionals who have a deep knowledge of young singers, and include: Cory Lippiello, Artistic Administrator, Lyric Opera of Chicago; Philip Pierce, Director of Artistic Administration, Florida Grand Opera; William Powers, Managing Director, Pittsburgh Opera; and Brian Speck, Director of Houston Grand Opera Studio. A total of at least $44,000 will be awarded, including an Audience Favorite Award. Winners of this competition include many singers who are having major careers in opera, including Michael Fabiano, Elizabeth Caballero, and Nadine Sierra. See the stars of tomorrow today!

Now the tables are turned on the unrepentant lord, as those he has wronged join forces to stop him—and a statue comes to life, ending his libertine campaign. The “edgy and imaginative young director” (The New Yorker) R. B. Schlather brings his distinctive vision to Mozart’s masterwork, with the fast-rising conductor Karina Canellakis on the podium.
